Recovery

It's been 5 days since the surgery and recovery is going about as expected.

The surgery itself went very well. Although an hour longer than the doctor expected. She said everything looked good, but she was glad that I had chosen to do it, as it was very needed.

The first few days were a little rough. Moving around and changing positions was very difficult. It brought back memories of being in the hospital with the twins and needing people to help me roll over.

Eek.

I am so grateful that my parents are here. They have been amazing and I just cannot imagine trying to do this without them. Everything is taken care of and I can totally focus on getting better.

It's kind of weird being so focused on recovering and trying to let everything else go. Other parts of my life keep trying to creep in, but I am doing my best to say no. It hasn't been 100% successful...as I said yes a couple of times I really should have said no...but I can't be perfect right out of the gate, right?

Tonight as I was thinking about how glad I am to have this behind me...I did have a small twinge of...I don't even know what as I thought about how my child bearing years are well and truly behind me now.

I have loved having each of my children and I feel so blessed to be their mom. And although it wasn't regret...it was a little moment of something.

Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers on my behalf. I have felt incredibly loved.

D Day

I know i've been kind of quiet here...and all for good reason.

I have been getting my life (and in particular my house) ready before I undergo major surgery tomorrow.

I have to admit that I am a little nervous. I have never had surgery before and it's a little scary to think about what could go wrong.

But I am quite confident that everything is going to go right and all will be well.

And...honestly in the whole scheme of things what I have to experience is minor in comparison to what others are currently facing -- and keeping things in perspective is pretty important to me right now.

In case you have any interest in what type of surgery I am having...I will provide details below.

If you're still with me, as you know, we have had quite a few children in a relatively short amount of time.

7 babies in 10 years.

I know. Crazy.

So, I have had quite a bit of damage done to my pelvic floor and I will be having reconstructive surgery done.

It's a total of 7 different procedures done over 6 hours.

I have heard that the recovery is pretty rough, but again, I hesitate to complain as I know it will be but a moment and I will once again feel whole and healthy -- and I am really looking forward to that!

What is Pelvic Floor Reconstruction?
Pelvic floor reconstructive surgery consists of several procedures for correcting a condition called “pelvic organ prolapse.”

When the muscles of the pelvic floor are damaged or become weak – often due to childbirth – they are sometimes unable to support the weight of some or all of the pelvic and abdominal organs. If this occurs, one or more of the organs may drop (prolapse) below their normal positions, causing symptoms including discomfort, pain, and pressure.

The goal of pelvic floor reconstruction is to restore the normal structure and function of the affected organs.

About 35 percent of women will develop some form of pelvic organ prolapse.

It's funny how people never tell you what can happen to your body as you give birth and age.

I really don't know why that is, but i've been very surprised at how many women i've meet who are dealing with or have dealt with these issues.

Again, I feel like everything is going to be okay, and we will keep you posted on how things go.

The Craft Room

We got new carpet this week in a couple areas of the house...and while I love love love the new carpet, it was so much work to move everything out, and finally back in.

But, the upside is that I finally got my craft room organized how I wanted.

You may remember that I redid my office a while back and installed new shelving, and while I got what was in my office mostly organized, I still had a huge amount of crafting supplies in the basement.

Well, I got it all upstairs and I was determined that if it didn't fit in my craft room, I was getting rid of it.

So, after a major purge and a lot of reorganization I got in all in here and I am so happy to have it all in one place.

So...here is the final product.

I love the white shelving and all the fun colors. And I am so happy to have all my supplies in one place.

One Little Word

Another year has passed, each one quicker than the last.

January always seems like such a good time to make a fresh start...and this time is no exception.

Last year I wanted to do the one little word project -- one word to focus on for the year -- and last year, I choose the word patience.

Well, part way through the year I changed my word from patience to stronger. (Obviously I need to work on patience. lol), but I really needed to remember that I am stronger than I think am. And I feel like I made good progress on that goal.

This year...I wanted to keep pushing forward...spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically.

So, I choose the word BELIEF. Belief in myself. Belief in things bigger than myself. Belief that I can be just exactly the person I am supposed to be.

We will also be having a family home evening soon and choosing one little word for our family as well.

Sunday Musings

It's been crazy busy around here, and it feels like the only time I have to sit down is on Sundays.

And, it was a good Sunday.

Today, both Josh and Joe stood and bore their testimonies -- of scouts, of Christ, of their love for our Father in Heaven.

And it was a sweet reminder to me that even though they occasionally make me crazy...I am indeed blessed to be their mother.

They are both growing into fine young men.

(And I will be re-reading this post whenever I need a reminder!)

Sunday Musings

So...I have been asked several times, by several different people where I have been.

I've been here.

um. Mostly.

It has been a busy travel season for us.

Troy and I went to London. And to Utah.

And then the family went to Florida.

And I flew to Utah again.

Did I say I'd been here?

I might have to rethink that statement.

But...for all that has happened, including halloween, Josh's birthday and Thanksgiving...I have been rather quiet.

And I'm hoping to remedy that today...and hopefully in the days to come.

Today's talks at church were all about gratitude and they really got me thinking.

One of the talks was by our very own Miss Emma, who gave her first talk in sacrament meeting and did a marvelous job.

Emma said in her talk not expressing gratitude is like wrapping a present and then not giving it.

Another speaker said that true gratitude requires an actual expression of those feelings.

And the third speaker talked about being grateful for our trials.

All of these talks seemed directly aimed at me...and I felt the need to say out loud...how grateful I am for my life.

For my trials.

For my pain.

For the adversity.

And for all the good that comes from facing down the hard things and making it out the other side.

But...more than just making it...coming out stronger.

And happier.

And feeling so richly blessed that words seems inadequate.

But...words are all I have right now.

I know we are each at different places in our lives and having trials means something different for everyone.

Sometimes we have trials and it's all we can do to survive them.

Sometimes we have trials and they seem more than we can bear.

And sometimes...when we're ready...we have trials that knock us to the ground...and by the grace of God...we are lifted up again.

Carried in His arms.

And blessed more than we ever imagined possible.

So...if you've been wondering where I am...i'm still here.

And i'm good.

Doctor, Doctor

Some doctors are so good and some doctors...not so much.

The good news is Mikayla's biopsy came back negative. We are so pleased.

Thank you so much for your prayers on her behalf.

Love doctors who really care about their patients.

On the flip side, we had to take Joe to the doctor today.

He has been having really bad headaches..bad enough that they have made him throw up.

It doesn't happen a lot...but he had an episode about a month ago and now two more in the last week.

So, I made an appointment and took him in.

The doctor talked to us for a minute and then looked Joe over.

Then he said..."Well...strep throat is going around, so let's see if he has that."

uh. what?

He doesn't have a sore throat or a fever and has had periodic headaches. But you want to check for strep?

So he comes back in after about 10 minutes and says, "Well, he doesn't have strep."

well, duh.

so...he's all done with us and goes to leave and I say...uh...he's having headaches and he's throwing up and the doctor looks at me and says, "I don't think he has a brain tumor."

OHMYWORD.

I don't think he has a brain tumor either, you moron.

I think he's having headaches and they are making him throw up.

Can you give him something for the headaches?

"Oh, sure. Just a second."

Seriously.

How can a doctor like that continue to practice medicine?

We will be avoiding all future contact with this particular doctor.

Fifteen

Mikayla turned 15 yesterday. I can hardly believe it.

She really wanted to have a big party to celebrate and she wanted it to be spooky. So we went crazy with the decorations and junk food...and I think a fun time was had by all.

I know Mikayla really appreciated all her friends being there for her and making it a really memorable birthday.

We had our ward party tonight...Troy and I were in charge.

I thought it went well and everyone seemed to have a good time.

There was a huge turnout. I'm certain of the exact number, but I am guess well over 300 people. We had 20 different chilis and I was happy to see the Englis Family take top spot..although the Dzarans only missed it by one point!

I have spent the week getting everyone's costume's ready and I am pleased with the final result.

Everyone chose a different Disney villian.

Mikayla was Cruella DeVille:

Emma was the Queen of Hearts (and I am especially happy with her costume since I sewed it myself...and was super worried about how all the piecing would work on the dress and jacket...but I thought it turned out nicely):

Joe was Lotsa Hugging Bear (sewed this one as well...and I have to say...he is probably the only 12 year old boy in the world who would want to be a giant pink bear for Halloween, but he pulled it off pretty well, and managed to figure out that he could pretty much get any girl he wanted to hug him while wearing this costume. : ) Such a ladies man...don't know where that comes from. lol!)

Josh did not attend the ward party...but he is smee (from peter pan) and I will post his photo on Halloween).

Finally...Troy was Captain Hook ... although I was unable to pick up his coat before the party...so he looks a little more...Little Richard than Big Bad Sailor. (Sorry Troy!)

And I was running around like crazy, so no photos of my Maleficent costume (I will take one!) So...just a little self portrait after it was all over. (Do I look a little too excited? :) )

Strength and Beauty

Mikayla had the surgery yesterday to remove the mole from her leg. It has been sent off for a biopsy and we feel confident everything will be fine.

Mikayla is doing well, however, the remaining scar is a little more than we thought it would be.

Run Emma Run

Emma is doing track again this year and super excited to have a new event.

She is running the mile again -- which she mostly enjoys.

But, what she is most excited about is that she is doing the high jump.

I wish I had photos -- but it was the first event of the day and I didn't get there fast enough. But, I hope to have some soon.

Emma would really like to improve her high jump height and wondered if I might buy her a high jump mat and bar.

lol.

Things You Don't Expect

A couple of weeks ago we took Mikayla to the dermatologist.

She had an unusual mole on her leg that is growing and changing in both color and shape. We were very concerned about it.

And after everything we've been through in the last year...there is no messing around with these kinds of things.

Sure enough, the dermatologist wanted to have the mole removed and biopsied, but it was so large she referred us to a plastic surgeon.

Well...we met with the plastic surgeon this morning and he too feels we need to have the mole removed.

He is hopeful that the mole is most likely benign (thank goodness), but also feels like this is exactly the type of mole that can turn into something later in life (especially with Mikayla's family history) and should be taken care of as soon as possible.

So...in a couple of weeks Mikayla will have surgery to remove the mole. It's a good size mole and will leave her with a 2 to 3 inch scar (hence the plastic surgeon).

She is a little nervous about the procedure, but I know she's going to do really well.

And really, as she said, "Well...if you're going to have a big, ol scar, I guess it's better to have on your leg than somewhere else. It will be a good story."

lol. That's my girl!

So...consider this a little public service announcement and remember not only to do your own skin self checks, but also get to know your children's skin as well...so you will know when things are new or beginning to change.

Remember...it's never too early, and they are never too young.

We will keep you updated on the results of both Mikayla's surgery and the results of the biopsy.

Take Two and Call Me In the Morning

Katie had her well check up today.

We had just been to the doctor last week to look at her ears and it was a fairly pleasant visit, so she was looking forward to today's visit.

Of course, when she found out that not only would she have to pee in cup, get her finger pricked and have FOUR shots...

She said, "Mom. I don't think this is a good idea. Let's just go home."

lol.

But...now she's all ready to go to kindergarten next year.

And in case you didn't know...milkshakes make everything feel better.

Years and Years

We just got back from a whirlwind trip to Utah.

I know. So much travelling.

And I'm thinking it's definitely worth the huge mountain of laundry I have ahead of me.

Troy and I attended our law school reunions on Thursday -- his 10th year reunion and my 15th.

It's hard to believe that so much time has passed. Everyone really seemed the same -- except we each have a lot more kids and all those kids are so grown up!

We were able to see so many old friends over the weekend.

I was able to have breakfast with Kirstin and Heidi.

My goodness...but it was fantastic to sit in a restaurant with them, play cards and laugh our heads off.

We even managed a BYU football game -- which, by the way, was the very first Troy ever attended at the stadium. (In all the 10 years we lived in Provo together, and the 2 he was single here, he never went to a game. gasp!)

And...I have to say, if we were going to go to a game, this was the one to go to.

I spent most of the game wondering what was going on...and honestly thinking there was no way we were going to win.

But...being able to visit with the Bashaws, the Oldroyds and the Browns more than made up for it...and oh yeah, we won! lol.

With so much travelling we really missed the kids and are glad to be home.

Proud Mom Moment

Last night was court of honor for the scouts and it was a big night for Joe.

He spent the summer working really hard on his scouting and went to two different scout camps to get a jump on all his scouting requirements.

Well...all his hard work paid off.

Joe not only earned his Star Scout Award, he also earned 21 different merit badges this summer.

21!!!!

Joe has earned enough award to advance to Life Scout in just five more months, and is only 3 merit badges and a project away from earning his eagle. Not bad for a 12 year old!

We are so proud of him and all his hard work.

London Eats

I know you thought I was done with London posts...and I almost was. But I had to do one last post with a few food photos.

I don't know why...but I got it into my head that English food wasn't going to be very good.

Holy smokes. Was I wrong.

It was fantastic.

And so was every single type of ethnic food we tried while we were there, including: Japanese, Polish, Indian, and Mexican.

And the desserts.

oh my.

But of course, I only have about 1/2 the food photos I should have because I got so excited when the food would get to the table that I wouldn't remember to take the photo until after I had eaten the dish!

But, when I did remember:

London - Hello Goodbye

Our time in London just flew by.

It was seriously such a fantastic trip.

And the last day was no less wonderful.

We took the train out to Windsor Castle and I am so glad! It was just lovely.

Again, wish I could have taken photos of the inside, but the royal residence was amazing!

St. George's Cathedral.

We ended our day with a trip to the theater to see Wicked.

We had seen it before, but tonight's show was simply wonderful. The girl who played Elpheba (Rachel Tucker) was AMAZING!

London - Day 5

I was on my own for a good part of this day and really wanted to see the British Museum.

I was so happy to get there and find that they allowed photography.

And the museum was awesome.

Outside...and inside.

Ancient Egypt.

Ancient Greece.

The Elgin Marbles.

Can I just say when we were in Athens, the Greeks were super bitter about the marbles that Lord Elgin took back to England with him.

These marbles are on display at the British Museum...and can I just say that I can now understand why the Greeks were so bitter. The marbles are fantastic. (and the plaster molds the Greeks have on display in Athens don't even compare!)

More Ancient Greece.

One of my favorite items in the museum was the Rosetta Stone. Seriously...what a wonder.

The also had a nice little Korean exhibit.

And what would a day in London be without a Big Ben photo? lol.

After meeting up with Troy we went to see Westminster Abbey. Another place I couldn't take photos...and how sad...because it was perfection.

And then we visited St. Paul's Cathedral. It was simply stunning.

This was an especially great part of the day as we participated in the evening service -- which was sung by a boy's choir from Wimbledon. We were invited to sit in the quire seats ... right beyond the boy's choir and right next to the priest.

It was a lovely service.

After dinner...we walked back along the Thames so I could get a night shot of the London Eye.

London - Day 4

We were go, go, go, our whole time in London...and I think by the 4th day I was feeling it.

So...we had a more mellow sight-seeing day.

We started with the Globe Theater, where Shakespeare put on his plays. It isn't the original Globe...the actual site is a few blocks away. But...there were able to uncover enough on the original location to recreate a pretty accurate replica.

This sign on the door of the theater cracked me up.

We took another walk through London on our way to see the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery.

I wish that I could have taken some photos...especially in the Portrait Gallery. They were having a new artist contest and some of the work was beyond fantastic.

Across the street from the galleries was this little church. I couldn't resist a photo with that yummy blue sky.

The Galleries are located right beside Trafalgar Square...and on the square they have an olympics countdown timer. (It was a little reminder that all the crazy construction going on in the city was likely due to this.)

We made our way our to Kensington Palace...and Troy fell in love with the English gardens. It reminded him of his lifelong dream to live in some type of Manor House and have a hedged garden.

If we come back to London we will definitely be coming back here to have high tea at the Orangery. We got there right as it was closing and it looked amazing!

London - Day 3

Part of the London Pass was this great little cruise down the canals around the Little Venice part of London.

Loved sailing down the waterways and it just so happened that the weather was amazing!

I know everyone complains that it's always raining in London...but one of the best things about our London trip was the amazing weather...beautiful sunshine...blue skies...perfection.

It was just beautiful...and the history was wonderful. Robert Browning lived in this area and people today actually live on these little canal boats.

Loved all the beautiful architecture as well. Tons of churches...historical buildings.

After the canal ride we found ourselves in Camden...what better place to be on a Saturday morning than in the hustle and bustle of the open air markets and some of the most amazing food ever!

We met up with old friends Shannon and Scott and took a little walking tour of some of the London sights.

I drove Troy crazy with my desire for the perfect Big Ben shot.

After dinner, we made our way over to the London Eye. I really wanted to see everything lit up at night...and the Eye was the perfect way to do that.

London is just gorgeous at night!

London - Day 2

Apparently...we went a little crazy on day 1... and tried to see everything.

But of course, that isn't possible.

So...day 2 was a little more mellow.

We started off at Buckingham Palace.

I just love all the details on the palace. Every gate, every knob, everything is just amazing.

I was so impressed with the palace...it was one of my favorite places we visited. I so wished we could have taken photos inside.

One of my favorite things in the castle was Kate Middleton's wedding dress...and it shocks me how much I loved being able to see it.

It was just beautiful and possibly the most gorgeous dress I have ever seen. It was so much more impressive in person than it seemed on TV. All the work that went into it...was fantastic.

The palace was so fantastic. We even had a treat in the cafe.

After the palace we went to the Royal Mews -- where they maintain the coaches.

My other surprise in London was how much I loved riding the buses. I know i'm a big geek...but I just loved riding on the 2nd level in the front seat. Troy thought I was hilarious.

Shopping at Harrods was another real treat. Now that is a department store. The chocolate section was fantastic. FANTASTIC!!

And what trip to London would be complete without a visit to Platform 9 3/4?

And Picadilly? Not as impressive as I thought it would be. Sort of NY, lite. But...I was there.

Finally capping off the day with a ride in the tube (subway).

London - Day 1

I'm a travel dork.

Since Troy travels so much...everything is old hat to him...but for me...everything is new and exciting.

And getting bumped up to business on our trip over was new and exciting for me.

And I drove Troy crazy taking photos of everything...from the ginormous seats to the awesome food. Real plates. Amazing service.

And on an overnight flight? Being able to layout (almost) and really sleep? Wow. Wish I could always fly like this.

We got to London at 6 am and dropped our luggage off at the hotel and headed out to see the sights.

We bought a London Pass -- which gives you admission to like 60 different places -- it was so nice just to have everything paid for and be able to see almost everything we wanted to see -- and a bunch of stuff we never would have paid to see by itself, but was super cool to do with the pass. (The only thing we wanted to see which was not included in the London Pass was Buckingham Palace.)

We also bought a weeklong Oyster Card, which let us ride the tube and buses as often as we wanted.

As we wandered around London, we happened to pass by the Household Calvary Museum and they were actually in the process of changing the guard.

Seriously...how cool are these guys?

I told Katie to clean her room. She toddled off to get the job done and came back and said, "Mom. I cleaned my room. But...I am not making my bed until Thursday."

um. okay?

Went to concussion training at the school with the twins. In the middle of the training, Joe turns to me and says, "Wow Mom. There sure are a lot of ways to die."

oh geez.

Went shopping with Mikayla. She said, "Mom. Shoe shopping is so much easier than clothes shopping, cause I don't have to worry about whether or not the shoes are modest."

Amen.

Welcome to the Family

As you may know...I am married to the ~~cheapest~~ most frugal man alive.

Yes.

It's true.

So, when Troy makes a big purchase:

1. it's rare.
2. it's a big deal.

Troy has been wanting a big TV for a long time. We actually rearranged the living room to accommodate this purchase -- although we changed the living room furniture like 2 years ago -- and Troy still hadn't bought the TV.

For years we had a little 13 inch TV. After a while the color tube blew and we watched in black and white.

I think we had moved to Virginia before the kids realized cartoons were in color.

After a while one of Troy's coworkers was nice enough to give us a 17 inch TV. It was so great of her.

And when we moved to our new house we got our current 35 inch TV.

The First Day

The kids were so exited for the first day of school.

Everyone was up early and ready to go long before the buses even started rolling.

Mikayla left first and it was pitch black outside.

I can hardly believe she is starting high school.

How did that happen?

But...she is so strong and capable, I have no doubt she is doing to do great.

Joe and Emma are in 7th grade and now without their big sister at the middle school.

The students in the middle school are split into teams -- with half the students getting one set of teachers and half the students getting another.

Joe and Emma have never had the same teachers in school and last year were on totally different teams -- which meant two sets of field trips...totally different learning schedules, etc.

It made for interesting times here.

But this year, for the first time, they are on the same team and will actually have three academic classes together.

I am excited as a mom for this -- but I hope it's okay for them.

I guess the one upside is that most people don't even realize that they are related and when told that they are brother and sister often don't believe it's true.

Josh is in the 3rd grade.

We are very excited for this teacher this year.

3rd grade is a big year here -- it's the first time they get grades and the first time they really have a significant amount of homework.

Josh is a really smart boy but he's not a huge fan of working hard.

We'll see how it goes.

And Becky. She is in the 1st grade and all of the sudden looks so grown up to me.

I am so excited for her to have a good year and continue to grow.

And poor Katie. She just didn't understand why everyone else got to leave this morning except her.

She said, "Mom. I don't like this."

I know baby.

But...look for a post on little miss next week when she starts preschool - 5 days a week. MY WORD.

I'll try not to happy dance in front of her.

We Will Miss You

Last day of summer.

I really enjoy having the kids home for summer...it's a lazy time spent swimming and sunning and playing.

Other than never being able to get my house all the way clean...it's really a wonderful time for us.

But...I actually think the kids are more ready to return to school this year than I am.

So, we made it one last time to the pool.

Oh summer. We will miss you.

Hurricane Josh

It's been a crazy few weeks back here in Virginia.

An Earthquake.

A Hurricane.

Troy left town to visit his family and attend his high school reunion.

And as you know, we have a long history of some major disaster happening whenever Troy is gone.

We have had the water heater explode, a flood, emergency room visits, the list goes on an on.

Troy is headed home today, and I thought we were out of the woods as far as disasters go...but I didn't count on one thing -- Josh.

Now, don't get me wrong...on the scale of disasters, this one is pretty mild...and actually, I am probably the only one would even consider this a disaster.

But...after spending this morning getting all the kids ready for church by myself, getting into the car and being almost on time -- I was patting myself on the back from a job well done.

Until we got out of the car...and I saw this:

Sigh.

Oh well.

16 years later

It's August 19th.

16 years ago today:

I was 24 years old.
Living in Provo.
In between my 2nd and 3rd year of law school.
Crazy Nervous.

...and right about this time of day...I was just married.

I know everyone always said they married their best friend, but the truth of the matter is...I didn't yet know Troy well enough to call him my best friend.

We dated for just 30 days before becoming engaged.

I know that's crazy short and I'd have a fit if one of my kids decided to do that...but when you know, you know.

And believe me, I KNEW.

After being engaged for a few weeks, Troy left for a study abroad in Russia.

We were apart for almost our entire engagement.

So...on my wedding day I did not marry my best friend.

But...16 years later, i'm so grateful to say that I am married to him now.

The love that we share...it's been tried and tested...and has grown with every trial we have faced together.

And we are both better for it.

So, let me just say Happy Anniversary Troy.

I am ever grateful that we keep working on it...and keep making it better.

So glad that we are on the same page about where we are going and how we want to get there.

Mikayla finished her last day of summer school today.

She pulled out an A and enjoyed her time in school.

She now starts high school with French I, French II, Algebra, and Health and PE done.

Fun in the Sun

When we went up to get Emma from sailing camp, we had the chance to play a little as a family.

We went to the yacht club (uh...never imagined myself at a yacht club!), went swimming, went boating and tubing. It was a blast.

The kids even talked me into giving it a try.

And totally loved it when i had a major wipeout.

Which, by the way, reaffirms for me that I am well and truly old.

And, poor sweet Becky.

She took a ride with the big kids and had a major wipe out. MAJOR. She was so scared and did not want to ride again.

But, Troy and I got on with her and told her that we would take it nice and slow.

She was terrified of it all. But, she was a trooper and held on. I am so proud of her!

We really appreciate Quoc and Ellen taking Emma for the week and showing us a really good time.

Summer - What's Up with Mikayla?

Mikayla has been slogging her way through summer school. Getting up to catch the bus at 6, riding the bus for an hour, attending class for 5 hours and riding the bus home for an additional hour.

I am amazed to find that she really enjoys it and I am proud of her for working so hard on it.

In addition to Girl's Camp for Mikayla she also attended youth conference.

I was able to go as a chaperon and I have to say, it was a really wonderful experience.

I really love our youth.

The conference was really great. I especially enjoyed Mikayla's participation in a question and answer panel. She was so nervous, but she really did great!

Summer - What's Up With Emma?

Emma had a week at girl's camp - her first one and she had a really good time.

I received glowing reports from all her leaders as well as from a few stake people I ran into.

Everyone tells me she is so happy and bubbly and just so much fun. We have always thought so!

In addition to girl's camp, Emma spent a week at Mary's house attending sailing camp.

We are told that she is a natural and should continue learning to sail.

We went up to get her and were able to watch her crew a Flying Scot in a regatta. (She's the one in yellow.)

Here they are mid race -- Emma is "hiking out" (learning way out over the edge of the boat).

And here they are crossing the finish line.

This is Mary's cousin Minh sailing a laser, which is the boat Emma actually learned how to sail. Apparently she has gotten quite good at it.

In fact, she received the "Most Improved" sailor of the class.

Summer - What's Up With Josh?

Josh had cub camp this summer...and I am pretty sure he asked every day between the day that school let out and the first day of scout camp if today was the day.

I was able to go to scout camp this year and had a lot of fun being a camp helper and a walker.

Josh had a blast and they did all kinds of crazy cool things at camp, including making a catapult, making a marshmallow gun...and swimming every day.

I was glad that Jared and Josh got to do a couple of activities together at camp. I am a firm believer that these two were actually twins in heaven who decided one family couldn't handle them both.

It was really hot during camp, so swimming was a much anticipated activity.

Josh also had the chance to try out a slingshot. These are super hard to use! Thank goodness the ammo was just marshmallows.

Summer -- What's Up With Joe?

Joe spent two weeks this summer at Scout Camp.

He went the first time with the ward and then a second time with Brother Kunz and Brother Harris.

He had some really great experiences and has done all that he needs to earn his Star (including 18 merit badges!).

Joe is such a hard worker, I am so proud of all that he accomplished.

He especially enjoyed earning his rifling badge (apparently he is a very good shot) and his rocket badge.

Rob was nice enough to take some photos during Joe's 2nd week at camp.

Boys are such clean creatures.

Camping, scout style. Nick, Tyler and Joe all wanted to cram into one tent.

Joe needed a mirror for camp. So he borrowed one from his dad. He was telling the boys how his dad uses this mirror to check his bald spot...so Joe did a little demonstration.

Joe was able to do a little sailing.

And just a little bit of sleeping.

I am so grateful for really good scout leaders and super good friends who have done so much to help Joe have such a good time this summer.

This summer has been anything but a vacation.

And I can describe it in just one word: CAMP.

The kids have had one activity after another and i never thought i would look forward to school as a time to slow down. lol!

but there is it.

The Good News

Troy had his staples removed.

He is healing well and happy to be able to comb his hear without fear of ripping one off!

And...

We found our Troy is cancer free. YAY!!!!

There were additional cancer cells in the part they removed from his head, however, the perimeters are clear.

He will continue getting checked every few months, but we are beyond relieved that he is well.

Thank you so much for your love and support. I cannot begin to express how grateful we are to all of you.

I know that this really turned out to be quite minor for us...but it didn't feel minor. And no matter how difficult this was...the kindness and love we have received can never be repaid.

I am so lucky...to have such good friends and such good family...who love me so very much.

Troy and Andrea threw me a big party and we played Nertz all night.

Seriously...did I mention how lucky I am?

I cannot believe i'm 40. Wow.

There is no blowing out your birthday candles...when they are actually sparklers.

And Troy.

Sweet Troy.

I know I give him a hard time...but I could not ask for a better spouse. He is the best!

He went all out with the party and even made these awesome party gifts for everyone.

And he got me an iPad. OMGOSH. I'm in heaven.

Happy Independence Day

Best 4th of July. Ever.

We had a low key, wonderful 4th.

Family.

Friends.

Fireworks.

What more could you ask for?

Sparklers. (Katie was not a fan.)

We had so much fun with our family fireworks...and it turned out to be so much more than our family.

When we came out to light our fireworks, all the neighbors came as well as a few surprise friends, from the ward and from preschool. It was super fun.

And we ended the night with the city fireworks show. It was the best one we've been to since moving here.

Did I mention Katie was not a fan?

Cover Up

Troy was supposed to have his staples out today, but it didn't work out.

Luckily, we went out last night and bought Troy a new hat ... since his baseball cap wasn't totally appropriate for work.

Troy had the bandages removed today.

Other than a headache ... he is doing really well.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers. We feel so blessed to have so many people in our corner!

And...we did manage to find the silver lining in all of this.

Troy's bald spot is considerably smaller -- apparently one of the treatments for baldness is actually the removal of excess skin.

And...his forehead is a little tighter (so he looks like he got a little facelift). Unfortunately, his hairline does appear to have receded some.

Oh well.

Gotta take the good with the bad, right? : )

Plus...he is still totally hot.

Troy really is doing very well.

Really. It's gross.

Don't say I didn't warn you!

He really is a superman. I'm so glad he's okay!

Poor Baby

My poor baby.

The surgery went really well. Troy was nervous on the way to the hospital ... i don't think he slept well last night. I'm not sure i've ever seen him nervous before.

But...once he got checked in and prepped, he was a rock.

And I turned back into a worried mess.

The surgery was about 45 minutes and they removed about a half dollar size section from the top of his head. We go back tomorrow for them to take the bandages off. He's got 14 staples.

They will send the section they removed to a lab at Boston University for processing. We will know in about two weeks if he is cancer free. We have (as does the doctor) -- very high hopes.

Let's have a party when we know for sure.

The Big C

Do you ever think about how much your family means to you?

About how much the people you love mean to you and what your life would be life without them?

I think it's pretty easy to take those people for granted and sometimes things happen that make you take stock of your life and realize that our time here on earth is precious...and relatively short.

And that we really need to cherish the people that mean to most to us.

Troy was recently diagnosed with melanoma.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer.

It's been a scary time for us...and not knowing or having answers has been really tough.

But through it all, Troy has been a rock. Solid, Sure. Confident.

I, on the other hand, have been a wreck.

Troy likes to say that he has no need to worry because I do enough worrying for both of us.

Which, as loathe as I am to admit, is actually true.

Fortunately, Troy is at stage 1. We caught the cancer very early and Troy has surgery scheduled for Wednesday morning. If everything goes as planned, this should be all the treatment Troy needs.

I think that any time you have trials you have to be grateful for the good that comes from it.

One thing I hope that will come out of this is that we will each take the opportunity to check ourselves and our loved ones for the early signs of skin cancer.

I actually found the growth on Troy while cutting his hair and I urged him to see a doctor.

If you know Troy, getting him to go the doctor was no easy task.

But...he has also come away with the knowledge that he must always wear sunscreen and/or a hat.

I am hoping that each of you will take similar precautions.

Additionally, I have really had the chance to reaffirm to Troy how very much I love him and how much he means to me.

Life would not be the same without Troy in it. (Although I could definitely do without any more "dead husband" jokes from my dear sweet "still living" husband.)

We will keep you posted with how things are going.

Cause He's the Dad

We had an excellent father's day -- well, at least I did, so I am hoping Troy did too.

The kids made cards and Josh included some coupons in his. Troy's favorite coupon was the one which promised that Josh would give him a whole hour alone. lol!

Joe's card showed his vision of his super dad ... and for some reason, I was falling off a tall building when Troy swooped in to save me.

Should I be worried that Joe sees me needing to be rescued or that I am falling off a building?

The kids got Troy this great Super Dad card -- and we doctored up the photo on the card to show our own favorite Super Dad.

What more perfect card could you find for Troy than one that has him wearing socks, sandals, and a cape. Classic Troy.

I also made Troy a little gift and made him this little frame with an "I LOVE YOU MORE THAN COKE ZERO" sign.

BTW, It's true.

I know.

Shocking.

We also found Husker Du...one of Troy's favorite kids game.

I love you Troy.

The kids had a great school year and I am so proud of all of them.

It has been a year of growth and change. I was thinking that the kids really have changed this year...but I was surprised to see just how much with these side by sides of the first day and the last day of school.

Girding My Loins

I went grocery shopping today to prepare for three months of having the kids home 24/7.

I don't know about your kids...but my kids seem like they want to eat every 20 minutes when they are home.

And they are all at that age where they can easily eat me out of house and home.

Mikayla graduated from 8th grade.

It was a very nice ceremony and I am just so proud of her!

She graduated on the Principal's Honor Roll, straight A's all through middle school.

She received the Gold Presidential Academic Fitness Award.

And she was chosen as the top French student.

I cannot believe how quickly middle school flew by. I am sure high school will move equally fast. I am definitely not ready for this. But I am grateful that she is!

Spring Concert

The kids had their spring concert last night.

Other than Joe getting hurt at school and having to go to the ER to treat a hairline fracture -- which was par for the course for us -- it went really well.

Joe managed to play with his temporary cast -- and Mikayla even conducted the 6th grade orchestra. It was very cool.

Memorial Day

We had the chance to get away for the weekend. So fun to spend a little time with the family.

We drove out to Massanutten.

We spent one day driving around...exploring and found ourselves in the Shenandoah River. Troy had a good laugh over what "city" people we all are. I have to say...as Mikayla waded into the river with her purse.

Troy took some time to teach the kids to skip rocks. Doesn't Josh look like he's working hard at it?

We drove go karts.

We went tubing. I had to laugh when one of the women in line asked how the kept the snow cold. (Seriously?)

Oh my word it was hot. Katie thought so too.

And even mined for gems. Everyone needs to use a sluice at least once in their life, right?

It was a great weekend.

It has been a crazy busy weekend. The older kids are in the middle of SOLs and of course, that was when the school scheduled the 8th grade dance as well as the Showcase Music Festival in Williamsburg.

The middle school orchestra competed against schools from all over the region. They came in 2nd!

Mikayla played the violin and also recently learned to play the bass -- I continue to be impressed with her!

After the competition, the kids spend the day at Busch Gardens.

California Dreaming

I just got back from visiting my family in California.

It was so great to meet my new niece, take Katie to Disneyland, visit with the Snows, have a visit with Amy, and make a mad dash to Vegas and back and even do a couple photo shoots.

I'm editing them now and I can't wait to show them off...especially the ones of baby Kay.

Can I just say how confusing her name is for Katie?

Katie can spell her name now and she knows her name starts with a K. So when you ask her what her baby cousin's name is...she says, "I don't know. But there's a "k" in it." lol!

Cracks me up every time.

Here's a little sneak peek of the baby. This isn't from the photo shoot...but dang, isn't she sweet?

It was all I could do not to sneak her home with me. She is sooooo cute!

It's funny, but I have not felt one stirring of wanting another baby in the last three years...but holding this baby in my arms...oh boy.

I hope I'm over it now. : )

I was able to take Katie and her cousin Steve to Disneyland. It was soooo fun!

Katie wanted to meet every character possible. Every time she saw one...she would dash after it...no matter what else we were doing.

And Steve? Steve was obsessed with swords and he really wanted this one to be his.

But, no matter how hard he tried...it just wouldn't budge.

Of course, Katie just had to give it a try too.

Katie is at such a fun age...everything was super real to her and she loved every moment.

She was dancing around like a crazy person.

I got this little video of her inside the tiki room.

It's mostly her just spinning...and you can see about half way through she gets so dizzy, she can't even find me.

Then at the end...there is a huge boom. I thought she was going to pass out. She dashed back to my arms like the world was ending. lol!

In addition to Disneyland, we really enjoyed our lunch with the Snows. Gosh I miss them so much!!!

And I was able to catch up with my friend Amy and visit the Bashaws. It was such a great way to unwind after all the craziness back home.

And the best part?

Coming home to a clean house with all the laundry done...and my wonderful family.

Well...here I am.

Almost on the other side of the play.

And I am very grateful that it is almost over.

But...as I watched the performance tonight and I pondered on all the hours I spent sewing and gluing and creating. And the sacrifices my family made so I could help...I remembered that I do this...not for the recognition, but because I love my children and I want to help them however I can.

And it isn't only my own children. I love all these kids ... each and every one of them is special to me and I am so glad I got to work with them. They are amazing.

So...without further ado...I present to you...Parkside Players....Beauty and the Beast.

This is Belle (Sara). Her grandmother made this dress. I thought it was perfection.

Here is the Beast (played by Matt. I made his chest piece and gloves. I really thought it made his beastness complete.

Here's Emma. She is a shepherd.

Here's Gaston (played by Joey). Dawn made his vest. I thought it turned out great. I made his muscles...which were hilarious. And even added chest hair for a little realism. Maybe too much realism. LOL!

Here are the silly girls (Natalie, Hannah, Mariah and Steffi). Sheri, Hannah's grandmother and Natalie's mom made the dresses. Aren't they so cute?

Here are Lumiere and Cogsworth (played by Cameron and Jason). I made Lumiere...right down to his candlesticks...which turn on and off. I think the candlesticks were my favorite thing I made.

And on Cogsworth...Kersti made his jacket, but the hat and clock are me.

Here is Mrs. Potts (played by Haley). She was my toughest I think...because I had to sew her and shockingly...there are no teapot patterns out there. I ended up having to make her a second skirt so she could be human at the end...since I had to sew this skirt right onto the hoop to help it keep it's shape.

Here's Emma again...this time a villager. She gets to faint in this scene when Gaston flexes...she's a cute little fainter.

Just had to show off the back of Cogsworth. Love that little key.

Here is Babette (played by Samantha). Kersti made her feathery skirt. I took care of her apron, the hat and the wrist pieces.

Here is Madame de la Gran Bouche and Belle (played by Rachel and Sara). The wardrobe was another tough costume. I actually ended up making this one twice...since the first one did not allow her enough range of movement. I thought it turned out so cute. The wig really pulls it together.

Here's Emma as soup du jour.

The castle staff were so cute. They were all dressed as maids with different hair pieces. Mikayla did a great job putting the maid caps together.

I wish this photo were better...but I made 8 wolves and I loved how they turned out. The wolf scenes were some of my favorite in the show.

Cogsworth, Beast and Lumiere.

Here's Joe. He's chip and he was totally adorable. He had a few solo lines in the songs and he rocked it! Ben's grandmother made the chip...I just added the straps and the chip.

Belle is her beautiful dress her grandmother made ... which is in only about 2 minutes of the show. Dang it.

The Prince (played by Hunter). Hannah's grandmother also made the vest. The cloak is one I made a few years back.

A Good Boy

Taking a break from life.

phew.

I needed that.

Today was such a great day.

Joe and Emma turned 12 a couple of weeks ago and Joe got the priesthood.

But, we went on vacation so today was the first day he was able to pass the sacrament.

It was such a great experience (i think for him...but for sure for me).

Joe is such a good boy...deep down...really just good.

And I am so proud that he is worthy to have to the priesthood. I know he will honor it all the days of his life.

And...I am especially grateful that his grandma beatty was here to share this experience with us.

I Survived

I have been sewing like a madwoman. I'm almost done with the armoire and the tea pot...I will have photos soon.

In the meantime, Joe and Emma had a 6th grade field trip to Gettysburg.

It was very cool -- I had never been there before.

Other than being hot, it was a great day!

Oh yeah...and we had to wear matching shirts -- my goodness.

They had this very cool oil painting ... it was a huge circular mural and they added special lights and smoke to highlight different parts of the battle.

We toured the museum. The toll in human life was unbelievable. I cannot imagine the horror.

Then we toured the battlefield ... stopping along the way to learn a little more.

Flying Colors

Little Miss Katie had tubes put in today.

I actually think it was more traumatic for me than it was for her. (At least she got a popsicle when it was all over.)

She has long had a distrust of doctors but we have finally convinced her that doctors are very nice and really want to help us.

So...we got up early...got everyone ready and dropped off at the neighbor's to await the bus while we drove to the surgery center.

We got all gowned up and had some time to chill in the playroom.

Then they came to get us for the surgery.

Everything was going great until we hit the OR.

Katie knew immediately that this was not someplace she wanted to be and she lost it.

Oy vey.

Why the heck did I think I could do this?

She started flailing her arms and legs and screaming bloody murder.

They asked me to pin her down while they got the mask on her and put her under. She would not be consoled.

Even after she stopped struggling and was obviously under she continued to cry.

I really did not want to leave her while she was still crying, but the anesthesiologist said that she no longer knew I was there and that I should leave. It was so hard.

Seriously...what was I thinking?

But...she was done in less than 10 minutes and super chipper. No ill effects from being under.

The first thing she said was, "Dad, why are you talking so loud?"

lol! Her hearing test showed she had a temporary hearing loss...so we hope this means that too has been taken care of.

Now...our only hope means that she too will no longer be quite so LOUD.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

I know it's only a minor surgery, but I still worried and it helped knowing you were thinking of us.

Remember that post about my beautiful new office?

Oh...how I wish for beautiful. Really...i'd settle for clean.

It's a total disaster right now as I finish up the costumes for the middle school play.

This month is pretty much lost to me...but...it's going to be worth it, right?

Joe was good enough to model the clock for me.

I figured if Katie and Becky knew it was a clock I was on the right track.

First Class

Joe became a first class scout today and we are so proud of him!

He worked so hard. There is so much involved in making progress in scouts...service projects, swim lessons, camping. He is well on his way to becoming an eagle scout and we are looking forward to helping him continue his progress.

Way to go Joe!

Menu Monday

Last week was a disaster -- cooking wise.

I just cannot do a home improvement project and manage to keep the house clean and cook.

So we ate a lot of fast food and frozen dinners last week.

But my project is done...and menus are back on.

O have been trying to lose weight...all these menus have taken their toll on my waistline. uh...you know. that, six kids and a whole lotta chocolate. : )

I tried atkins for the last couple of weeks, but I thought it was too restrictive to be realistic for me. I found myself missing veggies. who knew?

So, next week I am going to try south beach. It's a little more moderate...so this week I thought I would fill in the gap with recipes from skinnytaste.com -- I am hoping that these taste good...because they look amazing!

Pork Chops with Mushrooms and Shallots

Cilantro Lime Shrimp

Lightened Up Creme Brulee French Toast

Broiled Pollo Sabroso

Seared Scallops, Grapefruit, Arugula and Spinach Salad with Champagne Vinaigrette

Broiled Tilapia with Thai Coconut Curry

And seriously...going to make these:

And in the spirit of full disclosure...I fell off the sugar wagon this weekend. White Chocolate Bread Pudding at Sweetwater. 2 of Janet Cherry's freaking amazing lemon drop cookies. A little chocolate. And birthday cake.

Oy.

When I fall...I fall hard.

But, even though I didn't lose any weight not eating sugar...I did feel better and I plan find a way to eliminate (most) sugar from my life. I think there is nothing wrong with the occasional treat -- but it was really more a way of life for me.

I did manage to go 3 weeks without it. That's a big deal for me. And it gives me hope.

AND... i'm 93 days without caffeine.

the fun zone

It seems like just yesterday that Joe and Emma were born.

And somehow that seems like a million years ago.

These tiny little people came into the world at just 4 pounds and 5 pounds. And look at them now.

12 years old. And they have both earned their Faith in God award (a program for children 8 to 11 at church). And now are ready to graduate to the young men and young women's programs (a program for youth 12 to 18 at church).

It feels like such a big step...and all the more poignant because there are two of them.

And we celebrated in style ... with a party at skate and fun zone ... including skating, laser tag, video games and more. The kids had a blast!

They thought the fun machine was amazing.

I am so proud of these kids and the good choices they make. They are truly wonderful.

All the Beatty's are cheerleaders.

It's true.

Troy is a cheerleader.

His mom is a cheerleader.

His sisters are cheerleaders.

And by cheerleader, I don't mean the kind that wear uniforms and carry pom poms (well...maybe Troy is that kind of cheerleader too).

But...I mean the kind that always root for you. Always cheer you on. Cheer you up. Tell you how you can do it.

I am not a cheerleader.

I know. Shocking.

In my defense, I am only a Beatty by marriage. : )

I tell you all this to give you a little context.

This morning Katie was trying to zip up her coat.

She said, "Mommy, I can't zip up my jacket."

I said, "If you wait a second, I'll help you."

She said, "No Mommy. You are supposed to say keep trying, you can do it! Just keep trying."

Apparently...I need to practice my cheerleading skills.

Personal Space

We ate frozen dinners, had piles of laundry, and just spent a week with the house in chaos.

Why?

Because I finally got my office done -- my own office. my own space. yay.

We moved Troy out of the office and made some space for him upstairs.

And...so I spent some time moving everything out of the room. I painted, put up new shelves and got everything put back in. I still have more craft supplies to move into my office, and plan of purging anything that doesn't fit into my office - can't wait for that!

Spent the morning on the phone with Comcast again.

Just have to say, once again, that their customer service is HORRIBLE.

When I asked to speak to the woman's supervisor, she told me she was so capable she did not require supervision.

Sunday Randomness

Really...snow?

I cannot believe that it snowed today. I was totally unprepared to clean the snow off my car this morning as we headed out for church.

I had already packed away all the winter clothes. Apparently...I jumped the gun.

Let's hope that really is the end of it...because I am so ready for a little warmth.

And in further randomness...Katie has taken to calling me Sister Beatty.

Troy had never heard her call me that before and it totally caught him off guard.

I had gotten Katie a bag of m&m's yesterday and Troy said, "Tell your mom thank you."

She said, "Thanks Sister Beatty."

Cracks me up.

Finally...we have a gimp in the house again...and it isn't me!

Poor Mikayla took a spill and wound up with a sprained ankle.

She needs to stay off it a few days...but she should recover in pretty short order.

We had the chance to go to a district art show on Saturday. There was a lot of talent there!

And we were so happy to see Becky's beautiful picture. Her's is the hand holding the flowers at the bottom.

She was one of just a handful of students whose work was selected.

So proud of all our kids this week!

Here We Go Again

Look at this happy face.

She is always a ray of sunshine, but the poor thing has been suffering from fluid in her ears -- she has actually suffered a temporary hearing loss because of it.

So...we finally got to see the specialist today and the verdict was another set of tubes.

I hate the idea of her having surgery again, but at the same time, I know it will be such a relief to her.

She has been complaining that it hurts or that she can hear her own voice in her ears -- a little katie echo.

Not to mention, because she can't hear...she's the loudest girl around -- by a lot.

So...April 8. We'll keep you posted.

Menu Monday

It's been 79 days since i've had a coke zero. And...the craving hasn't lessened.

Dang.

But, i'll let you know how it goes in 79 more. Because I really am committed to making this change.

And...now...it's been 7 days since i've had any sugar.

That might not seem like a big deal to you, but for me it's huge.

I have been using splenda in my recipes -- and no one has noticed the change. And...I did have a little piece of Melanie's A-MAZING baked french toast -- which I think had some real sugar in it...but no treats of any kind.

I have really ~~wanted~~ needed to make this change in my life...but every time I start a diet I fail miserably. So, I am taking a page from my friend Jeff and viewing this as a lifestyle.

As a major stress eater and a serious sugar addict...it pretty much has to be a lifestyle. And since i've gone public with this...i'm really committed. **eek**

I don't plan on this lasting forever (the no sugar thing)...but long enough so that I can make it an occasional thing...rather than an every day necessity.

So...onto the menus.

Last week i tried something new...and decided to try and shop twice instead of once. Of course, this did not work out at all.

I actually only ended up making half my menu and never did get back to the grocery store. So...lesson learned. I need to shop for the entire week at once.

Last week's menu:

Grilled Thai Beef Salad -- This was soooooo good. My gosh -- the marinade/salad dressing were delicious. I think will be making this dressing and keeping it in the fridge. KEEPER

Knife and Fork Chili Turkey Burger -- This also was delicious. I omitted the bell peppers and I thought this was wonderful. KEEPER

And...we didn't get to the rest. (life never does go how you planned it, does it?)

So...this week:

Mommy To Be

Nope. Not me.

We had Mariko's baby shower today...and it turned out so cute!

She is decorating the nursery in owls and that was the theme of the shower.

Didn't these onesies turn out so cute! The images were printed on my laser printer and ironed onto the shirts. So CUTE!

Didn't Mel's diaper cake turn out so cute!

Mariko is such a cute preggo! She's going to be an adorable mommy!

I love that her mom and sister were able to be here from Texas and of course her MIL and SIL. Cute family.

Try Not To Drool

I got the chance to go to a cooking class tonight.

It was so nice to get out of the house and learn something.

Seriously. I LOVE learning new skills!

Menu Monday

We had a super busy weekend with the Kunz kids over...but they were super good and we had a really good time!

I feel like i'm slowly but surely getting things back on track and I have even found a little of my missing motivation. (I actually tackled two of the very worst things of my to do list -- and life feels so much better having those things out the door!)

As for last week's menu:

Lighter General Tso's Chicken -- YUM YUM YUM. This was a huge hit with the family and just so darn good. I even had the butcher slice up all the chicken for me -- so making it was a snap! KEEPER

Baked Ziti -- Another FAB hit. We made this one for the Kunz kids as well and it got devoured! Some of the kids had 4 servings. Easy and yummy. KEEPER

Chicken and Basil Stir Fry -- making this one tonight. So I will let you know. Actually - I have a PTA meeting, so Troy is going to make this one.

Beef Stroganoff -- Not so much. I really like beef stroganoff, but so am going to keep looking. This was had a strong mustard flavor, and I was not a fan.

Crispy Ginger Lime Chicken -- Also not so much. The dressing was kind of yuck. So...I threw it out and made my own.

1/2 c soy sauce
1/4 lime juice
1 T ginger, minced,
6 garlic cloves, crushed
2 T sugar
2 T mirin

But the chicken thighs in the sauce for just a few minutes...then put them on a broiling pan and poured some of the sauce over and broiled -- 8 minutes per side. It was moist and delicious.

So...this week, I am continuing on my search for lighter fare, and we are going low carb. This weeks menus come from FoodNetwork.com. I love how you can find recipes from some of your favorite TV chefs all in one place.

What do you do with a houseful of crazy children?

Well...when there are 10 of them...you load them into two cars and hit one of the funnest parks around -- fantasy park in woodbridge.

The kids had a blast.

The big ones.

The honorary Beatty ones.

The in between ones.

The little ones.

The kids loved this slide -- and it was FAST.

So fast in fact...katie went down -- and evan landed right on her.

Guess What?

So, I am trying not to jinx myself...but Katie got her "i'm potty trained" doll yesterday.

It's been sitting in my office since November. And she has wanted it everyday since then.

I have never been so happy to give her a present EVER! And I think she was equally happy.

Menu Monday

Okay. Getting back on track this week with menu's and my life.

I was surprised how putting on one large activity wiped me out for the rest of the week. Apparently, I am no longer a spring chicken.

To review that last set of menus:

Pizza Margherita -- This was delicious. And so reminded me of Rome! We used store bought dough and it was cooked up in a jiff -- the thin pillsbury pizza dough. Easy and yummy! KEEPER

Mushroom Bolognese -- This too was soooo yummy. I did leave out the milk -- cause I though it tasted amazing without it ... really, really amazing! KEEPER

Thai Basil Beef - This was another dish i LOVED. The kids were not thrilled by it, even the big ones, however, it was so good, I envision us eating this again. Sorry kids. KEEPER

Roasted Chicken and Bow Tie Pasta - This was gross. Sorry. just gross. I ended up throwing out the sauce and making an orange citrus sauce, which I really liked. But, this recipe. yuck.

Currey Ginger Butternut Squash Soup -- I ran out of days to make this one, so we will try it another day.

So, for this week, the recipes are coming from Everyday Food.

I had coke points to use, so I used them to subscribe to this magazine. So far, so good.

Poor Baby

Joe had to have a gingivectomy this morning.

He has braces and has had a hard time keeping his gums healthy...and it finally reached the point where he needed to have parts of his gums removed.

He looked so sad and miserable.

But he was a good enough sport to let me take his photo before he went to lay down.

Isn't he just so sad?

Why? you ask.

Because I have been working on my personal progress -- and was able to finish my second to last value project.

Mothers are now encouraged to get their medallions with their daughters and Mikayla and I have been working on it together.

In fact, as part of our personal progress project, Mikayla and I (along with Emma) planned, prepared and presented the Young Woman's New Beginnings program.

We made and sent out invitations.

We made decorations.

We made food:

We made little favors for the incoming beehives:

And for the young women who had moved in during this last year:

And made/collected costumes (with a lot of gratitude that the middle school had recently done the wizard of oz):

Along the way, they met lots of fun characters who told them about each of the young women's values.

I hope it was fun for the girls.

I know it was for Mikayla, Emma, and I. And I'm glad that we could work on this together!

And...thank goodness for the Colonel...who provided dinner tonight.
